When Should You Take vitamin C?
One of the most important vitamins we take daily is vitamin C. Also known as ascorbic acid, it’s a nutrient that plays an essential role in the immune system.3
Why our bodies need vitamin C
Vitamin C is fundamental in healing wounds, maintaining bones and teeth, and growing and repairing tissues in all parts of your body.1 You also need vitamin C to make collagen, an important protein used to make skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.1
Vitamin C also plays an important role against the effects of free radicals.2 Vitamin C also helps your body absorb and store iron, another necessary nutrient that the body needs to grow and develop.2
When should I take vitamin C?
There is no “best” time to take vitamin C, and it can be taken anytime throughout the day. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning that your body doesn't store what it doesn’t use.1 With this thought in mind, you can take vitamin C supplements (such as pills, powder, etc.) with water throughout the day (based on individual directions per product), to replenish what’s been lost throughout the course of the day.1 The water has an additional benefit because some vitamin C supplements can have a diuretic effect, which means they help the body rid itself of excess fluids.1
Because our bodies can’t generate vitamin C on their own, it’s important to get it from the foods and drinks that we consume. Vitamin C is most commonly found in citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, and it also appears in berries, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and spinach.2
